Spiritual awakening is frequently described as a journey to the top of the mountain. I always thought the goal was to reach some ”higher” level where I would not hurt, be afraid or stressed by life. A place where I could skip around and sprinkle spiritual pixy dust wherever I went.
However, what I have discovered is that the path does not go up…it goes down.
Instead of leaving everything and everyone behind, by ascending to a holy mountaintop, I descend. I move down toward reality, unpredictability, insecurity, and suffering (mine and others).
And at the bottom, in the grime and muck, I will find my wounded, softened heart….I will discover the love that will not die.
